What’s New 2010: Tweite’s Weather Center

You’ve been building excitement all summer long to visit the Pumpkin Patch and you finally have your weekend planned and the family is packed up and ready to head to the farm; then the clouds roll in.  How do you know if we are open?  Will you be able to enjoy the farm as planned?

In previous years, the only option you had to determine whether the farm was open or not was to call in advance; or just risk showing up and seeing the gates closed.  We have made it simpler this year for you to stay updated on the weather situation at Tweite’s.  We here at the farm watch the weather in the fall as close as the KAAL weather team.  Not only will our phones still be open, but you can now bookmark our blog, facebook page, or twitter page to get updated reports on our closing decisions each day.  We will make our decisions no later than an hour before opening so that you can prepare well in advance.

Don’t assume that the weather is the same outside your front door as it is at the farm.  It may feel somewhat mild outside your front door, but the breeze out at the farm brings a bit of a chill.  Or some days it may be sunny and calm at the Pumpkin Patch while it is overcast and breezy at your home.  Stay informed with our web updates to prepare for the weather at the farm.

What’s New 2010: School Curriculum

In the remaining days leading up to our opening weekend at Tweite’s we will be revealing some of what is new to the farm in 2010.  Before you know it the leaves will be changing color, the air will be getting cooler, and the pumpkins will be ripe for pickin’.

For years, Tweite’s Pumpkin Patch has worked with local schools to provide an educational field trip for young students.  In the past we offered educational skits, explanations of plant life, descriptions of the farm, samples of ornamental corn and pumpkins, and wagon rides.  Schools from around the region brought their kids in for a day filled with fun through outdoor play and farm education.  Hundreds of young learners pass through during the week to get a glimpse of life on the Pumpkin Patch.

Seeing hundreds of excited young faces show up in the fall is a treat.  Not only do the children get an educational experience, but the adults get a nice little workout chases them around the farm.  It is a pleasure to work with the dedicated teachers and volunteers who join us every fall.

This year we have taken some suggestions from the educators and transformed the program.  Some of the play areas have been targeted for more hands-on educational opportunities.  Previously, the school tours were limited to a couple of play areas.  This year the majority of the farm will be open to the children during the school week.  Our biggest change will be to the tour portion of the program.

In the place of the educational presentation, an education specialist has written curriculum for the farm.  The curriculum addresses the areas of math, science, and language arts and meets specific state standards.  Each lesson includes the description of the standards that are met making it easier for the teacher to make the field trip appropriate for the class age group.  Teachers can download the plans from our website and prepare the students in advance with supporting lessons and continue the lesson after their visit.

If your child’s class is not attending this year, contact your school and ask them to check us out.

Advance Sales Now Open!

We revealed to you a couple weeks ago that you would be able to purchase your tickets in advance by phone and simply pick them up at the will call window when you arrive.  How convenient is that!?

Well, the phone lines are now open.  You can call Monday through Friday between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm to reserve your tickets for the fall.  Our sales specialist will be standing by to take your order and send confirmation of your purchase.  With your tickets awaiting you at the window, all you need to do is prepare the kids.

What’s New 2010: New Ticket Booths

In the remaining days leading up to our opening weekend at Tweite’s we will be revealing some of what is new to the farm in 2010.  Before you know it the leaves will be changing color, the air will be getting cooler, and the pumpkins will be ripe for pickin’.

Many people will remember the beautiful days in the fall when it is 68 degrees and sunny with a nice cool fall breeze.  They arrive on the farm with excited children ready to burn off some energy with an exciting day on the farm and you are immediately confronted with a long line for tickets.  Ugh!

Or try this scenario.  After a fun-filled morning, the kids need to refuel on juice boxes and hot dogs.  You tell all the kids about the wonderful treats awaiting them in the concession barn.  They just need to wait while you make your way to the front of the farm.  Once you arrive you notice a line out the door, and when you finally make it inside, it is even more chaotic with people trying to get by one another through the narrow entrance.

Well, your concerns have been addressed this off-season with one major move.  The ticket booth area has been moved and greatly improved.  It has been relocated to the house (right next to the wagon ride entrance) where there is more space and the number of service windows has increased from two to three.  No more long lines with crossing foot traffic trying to get by.  In addition, you can now call in during the week to pre-order your tickets and simply pick them up at the window when you arrive.  No more waiting in line to pay and get the farm rundown.  Simply call in, pick up your tickets and you are on your way.

Because the ticket booth has been relocated, the previous ticket sales area has been remodeled to provide a new entrance to the concession barn.  No longer are the entrance and exit through the same door.  Now customers can follow one simple path from the entrance – walking by an small area highlighting the farm’s history – to the food counters, to the checkout and out the door without climbing over kids and sneaking by the long line.  You can now progress through and refuel the kids quick enough to get them back out to the play areas.

What’s New 2010: Ducktona 500

In the remaining days leading up to our opening weekend at Tweite’s we will be revealing some of what is new to the farm in 2010.  Before you know it the leaves will be changing color, the air will be getting cooler, and the pumpkins will be ripe for pickin’.

Last season, Tweite’s Pumpkin Patch unveiled the Duck Races available to all ticket holders.  Scattered around the farm were “race tracks” with running water that allowed you to race little plastic duckies (purchased separately) against your friends.  This season we have made a few modifications to the track.

The Ducktona 500 race track has nearly doubled in length and refitted with more reliable pumps.  It was fun last year to see the kids running up and down the tracks chasing after their racing ducks.  This year they will have to run a little quicker to keep the pace with our faster track and ducks who have been tuning up over the offseason.
